Mercedes-Benz Garbage Trucks Successfully Enter Colombia

Two sanitation companies, LIME, and Bogotá Limpia, newly purchased 20 Atego 1729 automatic transmission garbage trucks for urban sanitation in Bogotá.

CSCTRUCK Municipal has won the bid to deliver 39 new Atego 1729s (Euro V compliant) to Bogota, Colombia’s capital and largest city, to renew its garbage collection and urban sanitation fleet. The newly delivered vehicles are assembled at the Sao Bernardo do Campo plant in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and are equipped with Allison fully automatic transmissions.

The newly procured Atego trucks were delivered to two sanitation companies, LIME (Limpieza Metropolitana S.A.) and Bogotá Limpia, highlighting the global trend of applying fully automatic transmissions to sanitation vehicles.

Garbage trucks need to withstand heavy loads and frequent operating conditions of starting and stopping, but they cannot fail. The daily work wears a lot of gear, so the durability requirements are very strict. Automatic transmissions are designed for extremely demanding applications.

Unlike the traditional launch clutches found on many vehicles, Allison transmissions use torque converter technology to provide unmatched reliability, extending vehicle uptime and reducing maintenance costs.

According to António Valverde, Maintenance Manager at LIME, “Because of the many problems with vehicles with dry clutches, it was a natural decision to go with an automatic truck.

This is the second time we’ve had an automatic transmission since we started using a vehicle with an Allison transmission from 2003 to 2010, and our previous experience with it made us want to continue it. ”

Another significant benefit for the company from the Allison transmission is driver comfort. In addition, Allison transmissions avoid frequent manual shifting, preventing damage to the vehicle’s driveline caused by human error or improper operation.

The Atego 1729 model has a wheelbase of 4800 mm and is equipped with an OM 926 LA 6-cylinder engine with a power of 286 hp and a torque of 1120 Nm, suitable for a 19 cubic meter compactor garbage truck. Vehicles exported to Colombia have equipped with an Allison 3000 series six-speed fully automatic transmission with a power take-off interface.
